I had the same issue of archives not reducing the file size since a year now last time I manually deleted emails but since I now archived almost everything, it's not feasible to delete emails from the utmost recent ones.

Having had to look for an email containing a software code, I've just realized that my Deleted folder has emails going back only a few weeks.
